Critical summary

John Ratey, a Harvard psychiatrist, spent decades studying ADHD, anxiety, and depression. He noticed a pattern: his patients who exercised regularly improved faster than those who didn't, often rivaling medication in effectiveness. Spark is his case for exercise as medicine - specifically, brain medicine.

The book's centerpiece is Naperville, Illinois, a school district that implemented "zero-hour PE" - rigorous exercise before first period. Results: Naperville students ranked 1st in the world in science (6th in math) on international tests, despite being an average American school district. Students with learning disabilities saw dramatic improvement. Discipline problems dropped. The secret? Exercise primed their brains to learn.

  • Overwhelming jargon: BDNF, VEGF, IGF-1, LTP, HPA axis, dendrites, synaptic plasticity - Ratey loves acronyms and neurological terminology. Casual readers will struggle. The book could have been 30% shorter and more readable.
  • Overly prescriptive at times: Ratey recommends 45-60 minutes of aerobic exercise 6 days/week, with 4 moderate days and 2 high-intensity days. This is ideal but unrealistic for most people. He doesn't emphasize enough that some exercise is infinitely better than none.
  • Underemphasizes practical barriers: Time, motivation, access to facilities, physical limitations - these are real obstacles. Ratey addresses them briefly but doesn't offer enough practical strategies for overcoming them.
  • Dated: Published 2008, pre-smartphone era. Doesn't address modern challenges (screen addiction, sedentary remote work).

Evidence quality

Exceptional. Ratey is a Harvard Medical School professor with decades of clinical experience and published research. Every chapter cites peer-reviewed studies from neuroscience, psychiatry, and medicine. The Naperville case study is documented with test scores and follow-up research. This is as evidence-based as self-help gets.

Critics say the book is too technical and repetitive. Fair. But the core message is bulletproof: exercise is the most underutilized, overpowered tool for mental health and cognitive performance.
